Explore the Jewish experience at Fort McHenry with children’s author Tovah Yavin, learn about the importance of Jewish participation in the Battle of Baltimore Harbor that helped to win the War of 1812. Participants will discover the connection between Jewish Baltimore, the Star-Spangled Banner and religious freedom in Maryland politics. Plus lean more about role Mendes Cohen played in the War of 1812 and how he almost missed it completely! Carry on the fun after the reading with activities for the whole family.

 

Tovah Yavin’s middle-grade novel, All-Star Season, received both the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award and a 2008 Notable Book Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries. The locations depicted in the book may seem very familiar to residents of the Baltimore and Silver Spring areas. She has also published poetry in a variety of literary magazines and short fiction for children and adults in trade and educational anthologies. Her article following the Battle of Baltimore Harbor through the experiences of the Jewish soldiers who fought there, “A Star-Spangled New Year,” will be appearing in Highlights Magazine for Children.
