We are pleased to be welcoming to the JMM Dr. Ralph Eshelman, an expert on Maryland history, who will explore the many 1812 Chesapeake stories from the “Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail”  that he has collected for his book In Full Glory Reflected: Discovering the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake.

 

217859 War1812Ralph Eshelman has over 35 years of cultural resource management experience. Specific to the War of 1812, Eshelman was co-director of the Patuxent River Cultural Resource Survey which discovered and partially excavated an American War of 1812 military vessel from the U.S. Chesapeake Flotilla.  He also conducted a holistic inventory of War of 1812 sites in Maryland for the National Park Service’s National Battlefield Protection Program.  Eshelman served as the historian for the “Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail” Study Team  of the National Park Service and was designated “Honorary Colonel of the Fort McHenry Guard” in 2009.

 

Eshelman has given talks for the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 Associate Council, Cosmos Club, Rotary International District Conference, National Association of Secretaries of State, and served as a popular speaker for the Maryland Humanities Council War of 1812 Speaker Series. Ralph also has impersonated Commodore Joshua Barney at “Food in the Garden – The Chesapeake: Cultural Connections,” National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. Eshelman also appeared as a panelist for “Maryland and the War of 1812” Annapolis Book Festival covered by C-Span. Eshelman has published many papers on the War of 1812, and provides lectures and land and water tours. He has served as official photographer for many War of 1812 reenactments including the Grand Tactical, Battles of St. Leonard Creek, Bladensburg and Caulks Field. Eshelman’s images have appeared in many books, magazines and promotion pieces.
