Jews on the Move: Baltimore and the Suburban Exodus, 1945-1968

First one family moved, then a second and a third. Soon hundreds of Jewish families had relocated from their city row houses to the ranch houses and split levels of the postwar suburban frontier, as Baltimore Jews joined in the national rush to suburbia that began after World War II.
By the late 1960’s, some four out of five Jews lived in a single section of the metro area: greater northwest Baltimore, from Upper Park Heights deep into the suburbs of Baltimore County. And that ratio holds true to this day.
Such a sudden and long-lasting change could only have happened as a result of powerful forces coming together at once.
