The choirs of Beth El Congregation and Brown Memorial Park Avenue Congregational Church, led by Cantor Thom King and Michael Britt, present A Legacy Lost: Musical Traditions of the German Jews.

“A Legacy Lost” is the first event made possible by The Patsy and Fritz Goldschmidt Memorial Music Fund. Fritz survived Kristallnacht. The Nazis destroyed every Jewish institution from his home town of Neisse in German Silesia.

His father, Aron, was the cantor of the city’s synagogue, and later served as the Oberkantor (“Chief Cantor”) of one the largest Jewish synagogues in pre-World War II Berlin. Fritz grew up surrounded by music, not only liturgical music, but also the secular-classical music of renowned German composers such as Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, and Schubert.

“Fritz came-of-age in a world where great music was a part of the fabric of everyday life,” said Cantor Thom King. “Fritz loved liturgical music, and the songs our choir will perform at this event are the same he would have sung with his father, the cantor of a local synagogue.”
