Join us as we participate in Mitzvah Day in partnership with Jewish Volunteer Connection. Bring your whole family and spend part of your day giving back to our community with thousands of other volunteers across Baltimore.

This year’s program takes inspiration from our exhibit The A-Mazing Mendes Cohen. Mendes spent much of his life trying to piece together his identity, which led to some fascinating adventures near and far. Drawing on his experience participants will make puzzles for children spending the holidays in The Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai Hospital. Help us decorate puzzles and make parcels that are both fun and educational, for the youngest patients at Sinai Hospital. Artistic abilities are not essential and mitzvah activities are suitable for all ages. Mitzvah Day is a great way to bring the family together!

Can’t wait to help? Please feel free to drop off gently used books, for children of all ages, at the Museum that can be included in the packages that we will donate.

At 1:00 p.m. we are thrilled to offer a program featuring noted Baltimore historian and writer Gilbert Sandler who will further explore the topic of identity building through a discussion of Becoming American in Jewish Baltimore. Mr. Sandler will share the story of how Jewish Baltimore got started. His talk will examine the histories of the institutions the earliest immigrants established as well as the transformation of Jewish communal leaders from new immigrants as they assumed positions of prominence and wealth that helped them on their way to becoming American!

Join us again this year as we participate in Mitzvah Day, where we will be helping to make life a little easier for some of the children in our community. Mitzvah activities will be suitable for all ages and is a great way to bring the family together!

Following the Mitzvah activities we welcome Gilbert Sandler who will discuss Becoming American in Jewish Baltimore. Mr. Sandler will share the story of how Jewish Baltimore got started. Exploring the institutions the earliest immigrants founded that helped bring them into mainstream of America. Then how those institutions leaders arose from the newly-formed Jewish community to wider leadership and prominence and wealth and influence—and at long last become American!
