The Jew Bill. 1987.82.1

“An Act to extend to the sect of people professing the Jewish religion the same rights and privileges that are enjoyed by Christians,” also known as “The Jew Bill,” is one of the most important pieces of legislation passed in the state of Maryland relating to the Jewish community. Passed in 1826, it enabled Jews for the first time to hold public office. Join us as we hear from Dr. Goldstein about his new research on the Bill.

Following, join us for a book signing of On Middle Ground.

Eric L. Goldstein is the Judith London Evans Director of the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies at Emory University, where he is also Associate Professor of History and Jewish Studies. He is also the author of The Price of Whiteness: Jews, Race, and American Identity (Princeton University Press, 2006).

This program is presented in relation to the Amending America: The Bill of Rights exhibit, on display through May 28, 2018.
