As part of our Fly This! day we will be hearing from Paul Glenshaw about Arthur “Al” Welsh the first Jewish-American pilot, and one of the first pilots, period. He was the second student of Orville Wright himself. Welsh was a key, trusted member of the Wright brother’s team of exhibition pilots and instructors. This presentation follows Welsh from his birth in Russia to the streets of Washington, DC to the clouds in his Wright Flyer. Welsh was one of the finest pilots of his day – an early master of lift, weight, thrust, drag, and control.

Paul Glenshaw is an aviation history writer, filmmaker, and educator. He was the co-curator of a centennial exhibition about Welsh at the College Park Aviation Museum in 2012. He is co-producer of the PBS documentary Barnstorming, and a regular contributor to Air & Space Smithsonian.
