About the Book: Bucharest Diary is the previously untold story of the exodus of Jews from communist Romania to Israel.  Alfred Moses led the effort to get Jews out of Romania when it was controlled by communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.  In face-to-face meetings with Ceausescu, Moses established the right of Jews to freely emigrate.  Bucharest Diary has been acclaimed by American, Israeli and Romanian leaders who witnessed firsthand Moses’s success.

About the Author:  Alfred Moses, Washington author and Baltimore native, was appointed by President Clinton as his first ambassador to Romania, in recognition of Moses’s historic work on behalf of Romanian Jewry (as shared in Bucharest Diary).

As the American ambassador to Romania, Moses played a key role in helping Romania move from its communist past to democracy and to establish a free economy.  Moses also facilitated negotiations between Romania and its principal neighbors, Hungary and Ukraine, that resulted in basic treaties resolving border and other disputes, leading to Romania’s invitation to join NATO and the European Union.  Today, Romania has the fastest growing economy in Eastern Europe.

For his efforts, Moses was awarded the Marc Cruce medal by the Romanian government.  He is the only American to receive this distinction.
