Roots & Return

March 20 - March 22

B’nai Israel’s Descendants’ Day Shabbaton

March 20-22, 2020

Join B’nai Israel and the Jewish Museum of Maryland
for a “Homecoming” of historic Jonestown families!

Memories from the “alta haim” (old home) will inspire a packed weekend of presentations from historians with ties to Old Jewish Baltimore, panel moderated discussions, historic walking tours, and learning, praying and socializing. It will also include workshops on genealogical research and opportunities for families to share their own family stories from Southeast Baltimore. More than a walk down memory lane, we will be drawing lessons from our roots, our history, our tradition, and the present Baltimore Jewish community to consider the future of Jewish southeast Baltimore.

You’ll get to have discussions with leading scholars, eat well, offer and hear stories of the families that shaped the history or the area, and meet descendants of other families from the same neighborhood – all in the oldest synagogue in continuous use in Baltimore.

Everyone who comes to Descendants’ Day who is a descendant of a shul family will receive a copy of an original document where their ancestor is recorded in our archives. The first 20 people from an historic B’nai family who register receive a small scrapbook of family memorabilia upon arrival.
