JMM Members – Let us know you’re coming!

The JMM brings you another exciting culinary championship! This year we take inspiration from both the seasons and Jewish culinary tradition.  As the days grow shorter and the weather becomes colder, no food is more comforting than a great bake. From mandelbrot to bagels, and challah to rye we all have a favorite, almost all of which are improved with a generous schmeer of cream cheese or butter. This year we celebrate those bakes that are often, but not always, improved with a schmeer of something delicious or as we have named them schmeerables.

We invite Maryland’s greatest amateur bakers from newbies to bubbies to participate in this important statewide search: The Great Jewish Bake Off of 2018!

Even if you choose not to compete we encourage you to join us at the JMM for a day dedicated to baking, with tastings, tips from professionals and the announcement of Maryland’s greatest amateur baker. We’ll also have hands-on activities for the family!

*We are pleased to annouce your judges! Amy Simon, of Eddie’s of Roland Park and local food maven Martine Richards of Deviled Egg Pageant and Wreather Madness fame, will taste, discuss, and decide on the greatest bakers!*

Categories

The cook off will consist of three separate categories. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each category plus an overall “Best Bake” winner.

> Fully Schmeered – This bake goes perfectly with a schmeer of your favorite topping, perhaps the classic everything bagel or a delicious piece of challah.

> No Schmeer Here – Though this delicious bake normally goes perfectly with a schmeer, it is packed full of flavor so almost isn’t necessary, like a chocolate challah or raisin rye!

> Schmeer Surprise –  We know and love the traditional schmeerable options, but show us your fresh new take, rainbow bagels or pretzel challah fit in perfectly here.

Rules

>This competition is open to all amateur cooks residing in Maryland.

>One available space in each category will be reserved for an entrant under 16 years of age, if this place is not filled it will be offered to a cook on the waiting list.

>Each entrant should provide at least 100 servings of their bake –  remember the more you provide the better your chances of winning the People’s Choice Award.

>All entrants should be in the museum by 12:30pm on the day of the competition, ready to serve by 1pm.

>Winners for each category, plus an overall winner, will be announced at 3pm.

>All awards will be awarded based upon the opinions of our panel of judges, with the exception of the People’s Choice award which will be given to the bake that receives the most votes in the public vote.

>Entrants must stay with their bake throughout the judging period to serve and answer questions.

>While there are no limits to creativity, we do ask that all bakes conform to kosher standards. This means that all entries must be vegetarian (dairy or pareve) and only consist of kosher ingredients.

>The JMM will provide plain cream cheese for all entrants, all other toppings should be provided by the entrants.
