#TogetherWeRemember Campaign

#TogetherWeRemember is a citizen-led movement to end and prevent genocide and mass atrocities. The JMM will be supporting this project with thousands of others worldwide to build the first digital memorial to commemorate the victims of genocide and celebrate the heroes who fought against it.

We will hold a name-reading in the Lloyd Street Synagogue and share our community’s experience live on social media with the hashtag #TogetherWeRemember. The movement hopes to ignite an annual global tradition in which communities are united in solidarity, representing every race and religion, giving voice to victims of genocide past and present, and inspiring collective action for justice, memory, and peace.

The Occasional Symphony will kick off the program with a short performance! Occasional Symphony musicians Melissa Wertheimer (flute) and Sophia Subbayya Vastek (piano) will perform meditative flute and piano music by two Jewish composers, Erwin Schulhoff and Aaron Copland. Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was a Czech Jew who died in the Wultzburg concentration camp. Aaron Copland (1900-1990) was a proud member of the American Jewish community and the son of Lithuanian immigrants.

The narrative connection between Schulhoff’s “Aria” movement from his 1927 flute sonata and Copland’s “Poetic, somewhat mournful” movement from his 1971 flute sonata may be summed up in one word: ascension. Schulhoff’s “Aria” sings through to the present – an ascension in time that starkly contrasts his silenced ascension of artistic output. Copland’s “Poetic, somewhat mournful” comes from a man who indeed ascended to the greatest heights of the classical music world and his artistic potential. (Program Notes by Melissa E. Wertheimer)
