Sibel’s Jewish Legion Battalion planting trees on 15 Shevat (Arbor Day), c. 1915. JMM 1998.35.12.13

November 11, 2018 marks 100 years since the close of World War I. This Veterans Day join us at the JMM as we explore the unique history of the Jewish Legion.

The Jewish Legion was a special regiment made up entirely of volunteers. These Legionnaires, most of whom were Jewish, hailed from all around the world – and included several Baltimoreans. Legionnaires held strong Zionist beliefs, and through their actions hoped to promote the idea of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

The Jewish Museum of Maryland is very fortunate to hold a number of items donated by the Legion’s Baltimore volunteers. In this special program JMM Archivist Lorie Rombro will take us on an exploration of the collection. We will discover how the collection can illuminate the lives of the Baltimoreans who served and the bond between them, which lasted their entire lives.

The program will be followed by a light dessert reception (dietary laws observed).

This program made possible by a generous gift from The Carole and Hanan Sibel Family Foundation.
