SUMMARY:Across Life-Worlds Art Talk with Curator Vlad Smolkin
DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for a curator-led engagement exploring the art highlighted in Across Life-Worlds: A Family History of Soviet Jewish Emigration. Curated by Victoria Smolkin and Vlad Smolkin\, the exhibition places the stories of several Soviet Jewish families who came to Maryland in conversation with the global and national politics that enabled their emigration. Through presenting a selection of lived experiences\, the exhibition explores how American and Soviet Jews\, who began as distant strangers on opposite sides of the Cold War divide\, came to see each other as family.  \nAt the event\, explore the gallery and gain insight into aspects of the exhibition that both directly and indirectly incorporate art and artists. Learn about the ways that art functions to support and integrate the history of Soviet Jewish emigration presented. Hear how the curator’s background in the arts has shaped some of the curatorial decisions. \nAbout Across-Life Worlds \nIn the late twentieth century\, more than a million Soviet Jews left the Soviet Union—the largest ethnic emigration from the USSR\, and the largest Jewish migration since the “Great Migration.” In the late 1980s and early 1990s Maryland became a major destination for this Soviet Jewish exodus. Across Life-Worlds follows the stories of these disparate branches of the Jewish family\, tracing their converging fates during the Cold War and coming to a focus on their reunification in the U.S. The exhibition curators\, themselves children of Soviet Jewish emigration\, capture family stories in interviews\, photos\, home videos\, and objects that reflect the years before their departure and after their arrival—a period that also marks the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.  \nAbout the Featured Curator \nVlad Smolkin was born in Kyiv\, Ukraine\, and emigrated to the United States in 1989 with his parents and sister\, co-curator Victoria Smolkin. He is an artist\, curator\, and founding director of CPM Gallery in Baltimore\, where he presents an international roster of contemporary artists\, publishes limited edition prints\, and partners with a range of curators\, writers\, and scholars. Across his work\, he creates spaces for collaboration and critical reflection\, asking how individuals might see and act within the systems that organize their lives. Smolkin received his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012 and has exhibited nationally and internationally. His artistic and curatorial work has been featured in Frieze\, Artforum\, Forbes\, The Washington Post\, Artnet\, Hyperallergic\, BmoreArt\, among others. He has served as a visiting artist\, critic\, and lecturer at institutions including Moore College of Art and Design\, Johns Hopkins University\, the Maryland Institute College of Art\, Massey University in New Zealand\, Art Institute of Boston\, and Wesleyan University\, and has taught in the graduate Art History Department at Georgetown University. \nComplimentary kosher non-alcoholic beverages will be served.  \nPlease note that capacity for this program is very limited and advance registration is strongly encouraged. DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland on the final day of RE: Intimacy. Image. Identity. for a talk with the curator and artist. \nThe Jewish Museum of Maryland’s 2005 exhibition Intimacy. Image. Identity. Perspectives on Orthodox Jewish Women’s Haircovering presented a traditional form of dress practiced upon marriage. Its series of black and white film photographs by Zoë Reznick traveled across five sites state-wide. Two decades following the development of this project\, Museum staff resurfaced the exhibition materials. \nThrough RE: Intimacy. Image. Identity.\, the artist reunites the women she photographed two decades ago and reimagines this body of work through an expanded lens. The exhibition features select framed prints from the original show\, archival materials and photographs\, and multi-media reflections shared by women participating in the project\, illuminating regard for the personal significance of Jewish haircovering practice over time\, together\, in the present. \nAt the event\, learn more about the body of work behind the show\, hear how it evolved into two JMM exhibitions\, and get behind-the-scenes insights into the gallery before it closes. Zoë’s work has been presented at Artscape\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, and published in ImaginingAmerica\, a journal of Animating Democracy. She has facilitated youth photography projects for Baltimore City Department of Health and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health\, and produced numerous short films for organizations including American Civil Liberties Union Maryland and Kennedy Krieger Institute. Previously\, Zoë served as an Americorps Community Art Collaborative Member\, an instructor with the Education Justice Podcast Project based at Towson University\, and Director of Partnerships at New Lens. Most recently\, her short films were selected for installation at University of Maryland College Park’s artPROJECTS series and awarded support from Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund. \nZoë (AKA Zoë Reznick Gewanter) is Director of Public Programs at the Jewish Museum of Maryland. She holds a certificate from Darchei Binah Women’s School for Advanced Torah Studies\, a BA in Psychology from Goucher College\, and an MA in Community Art from Maryland Institute College of Art.
