SUMMARY:Cozy Crafting: Mezuzah Magic
DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for a cozy evening of Jewish art and hands-on creativity. \nInspired by the Upon Thy Gates and Modernisms exhibitions\, JMM Public Art Coordinator Naomi Weintraub will teach participants about mezuzot and lead them in collaging and decorating their own mezuzah cases to take home. Come craft and enjoy a warming beverage of your choice. \nIn addition to the materials provided\, participants can also bring photographs\, printed-on papers\, magazine images\, and favorite materials to use from home if they would like. \nAttendees will learn what is inside a mezuzah by viewing a crankie-puppetry piece all about the V’ahavta\, the central prayer inside a mezuzah. \nAttendees will also have the chance to explore the Museum\, visit the new audiovisual production studio\, and learn how to participate in Marking Passage: Mezuzah-Inspired Stories\, a new Museum production studio project in partnership with Stoop Storytelling. \nUpon Thy Gates is an exhibition presenting mezuzahs from around the world featured in the Elaine K. and Norman Winik Mezuzah Collection\, on loan from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education\, and curated by Kenneth Helphand\,  presented together with a selection of mezuzahs from JMM’s own collections. \nModernisms is an exhibition curated by J. Susan Isaacs\, presenting the work of artists responding to modernist ideas with a broad range of approaches. Exhibited together for the first time\, featured artists include Florence H. Austrian\, Jacob Glushakow\, Gladys Goldstein\, Mervin Jules\, Reuben Kramer\, Perna Krick\, Herman Maril\, Karl Metzler\, Selma L. Oppenheimer\, Amalie Rothschild\, Aaron Sopher\, Edward Rosenfeld\, and Peter Scholleck\, largely from JMM’s collection. Their views were shaped by Post Impressionism\, Fauvism\, German Expressionism\, Cubism\, Art Deco\, Surrealism\,  Bauhaus\, American Realism\, and Abstract Expressionism. Many of the practitioners within this group were described by artist Jacob Glushakow as “a school of Baltimore Jewish artists” that flourished for thirty years. \nKosher refreshments\, wine\, and beer will be served. \nAdmission to this program is included with admission to the Museum. JMM programs present Jewish culture\, community-supported. If cost is a barrier\, please select an Access ticket. Most programs are free for JMM Members. Become a JMM Member today to reserve your complimentary ticket. Please note that registration capacity is limited. You can register for the event here. \nAccessibility: The Museum building\, including the family and all-gender single-stall bathroom\, is wheelchair accessible. Masks are welcome but not required. Complimentary masks will be available for anyone who would like one. Noise-reducing headphones and earplugs are available upon request at the front desk. JMM is a KultureCity Certified Sensory Inclusive Venue. Please reach out if there are additional accessibility supports that you need. \nParking: There is street parking available in the neighborhood. \nFor questions\, please contact info@jewishmuseummd.org or 410.732.6400.
