A synagogue is many things. It is a building. It is the life within. It is a sacred space and a familiar place, a spiritual center and a congregational home. Since 1845, Maryland Jews have designed and built hundreds of synagogues. Every generation, in each new area of settlement, develops its own kind of synagogue, varied in size, shape, and style.

Over time, synagogues become storehouses of communal memory, monuments to the past. Yet they are also gateways to the future, ensuring the continuity of Jewish life. Merging Jewish time with American space, synagogues are basic building blocks of American Jewish life, cornerstones of community.
