Free Fall Baltimore: Collecting, Preserving and Exhibiting: Exploring the Collections of the Nation’s Medical Museum

Military medicine – past, present and future – is featured in the exhibit “Advances in Military Medicine” at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Md. The exhibit features challenges overcome by military medicine during the past 200 years, with artifacts drawn from across the museum’s collections. Items on display include medical and surgical kits, facial reconstruction masks, the floor of an Air Force tent hospital from Balad, Iraq and more. On May 21, 1862, Surgeon General William Hammond established a “Military Medical Museum” to collect and study specimens of morbid anatomy, both medical and surgical. Over 150 years later, the National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) continues to collect, preserve and exhibit both historical and contemporary collections related to anatomy and pathology as well as artifacts and archival materials that inspire and promote an understanding of medicine—past, present and future—with a special emphasis on American military medicine. Join museum staff for a look at how the NMHM has transformed from a “cabinet of curiosities” into an invaluable repository that contributes to scientific collaborations as well as a public appreciation of the value of military medicine to the nation.
Andrea Schierkolk currently serves as the Public Programs Manager of the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, M.D. Previously, she served as the Assistant Administrator of the N.C. State Capitol in Raleigh, N.C. Schierkolk holds a B.A. in History from Meredith College.
