DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for the opening of Open Court: Ping-Pong Pop-Up\, an experiential pop-up installation transforming the Museum’s Cohen Weinberg Gallery  into a community ping-pong venue featuring three tables\, scoreboards\, spectator bleachers\, a vibrant super graphic wall treatment\, and customized ping-pong balls. \nFeaturing graphic design by Bruce Willen\, Open Court is inspired by the deep history of Jewish ping-pong playing from backyards\, youth groups\, summer camps\, and play during Shabbat\, to the highest levels of the International Table Tennis Federation competition. \nLearn more about the installation\, see an anticipated ping-pong match between JMM Executive Director Sol Davis and Isaac Simon\, and try your hand (and paddle!) at the sport! \nIsaac Simon serves as the Internship Programs Manager at the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. Isaac is a trained archivist and Holocaust educator with an MA in History and MLS in Library Science from Queens College (CUNY). For the past five years he has worked for the noted writer and jazz historian\, Gary Giddins\, as both a research assistant on his upcoming biography of George Gershwin\, as well as a cataloguer of his personal papers. His research interests have dealt with Holocaust memorials\, memory\, and the history of Holocaust education in the United States. Isaac acted in the recently released A24 film Marty Supreme in the role of Roger\, a cocky amateur table tennis player who is hustled by Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Mauser. \n1:30 PM Program opening + Isaac Simon v. Please contact info@jewishmuseummd.org with questions or concerns. \n\n  \nJoin the Jewish Museum of Maryland for an afternoon of art\, discovery\, and hands-on creativity. Take a 30-minute tour of Modernisms\, led by the curator J. Susan Isaacs\, exploring the work of artists responding to modernist ideas with a broad range of approaches. Exhibited together for the first time\, featured artists include Florence H. Austrian\, Jacob Glushakow\, Gladys Goldstein\, Mervin Jules\, Reuben Kramer\, Perna Krick\, Herman Maril\, Karl Metzler\, Selma L. Oppenheimer\, Amalie Rothschild\, Aaron Sopher\, Edward Rosenfeld\, and Peter Scholleck\, largely from JMM’s collection. Their views were shaped by Post Impressionism\, Fauvism\, German Expressionism\, Cubism\, Art Deco\, Surrealism\,  Bauhaus\, American Realism\, and Abstract Expressionism. Many of the practitioners within this group were described by artist Jacob Glushakow as “a school of Baltimore Jewish artists” that flourished for thirty years. Learn about the art of collage\, and make your own collage with the exhibition curator and artist J. Susan Isaacs. \nIn addition to the materials provided\, participants can also bring photographs\, magazine images\, and favorite materials from home if they would like.  \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to visit Upon Thy Gates\, an exhibition presenting mezuzahs from around the world featured in the Elaine K. and Norman Winik Mezuzah Collection\, on loan from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education\, as well as to visit the Museum’s new audio/visual production studio to share personal reflections. \nRegistration for this event is required and capacity is limited.  \nThis program is recommended for ages 16+ \nSusan Isaacs is retired from teaching art history and museum studies at Towson University\, where she curated many exhibitions for the Department of Art + Design\, Art History\, and Art Education Galleries. We are reviewing options for holding the program at a later date and look forward to sharing an update soon. \n  \n\nJoin JMM for the global premiere of Penumbra\, an immersive live performance of music and simultaneous video screening created by Alexis Gideon exploring transgenerational trauma and the artist’s ambivalence about his Jewish identity. The video and song cycle feature a semi-autobiographical version of Gideon\, exploring his visions of a past life as a young woman murdered by a soldier on a train platform. Each song is depicted with vividly painted animations; some include recordings of Gideon’s family members recounting their experiences. Throughout\, the piece investigates the concept of the interspiritual connectedness of all beings\, and the dissolving of boundaries between the self and other\, ultimately uncovering insights into the divine. \nThe work will be performed live by Alexis Gideon and Mira Cook. Following the performance\, participate in a Q&A conversation with the artists. \nAlexis Gideon is an American visual artist\, composer\, and performer\, best known for his innovative animated live video operas and interdisciplinary techniques. Gideon considers music the backbone and inspiration for all his work. Gideon has performed and exhibited throughout the world\, including at Moderna Museet Stockholm\, New Museum of Contemporary Art\, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston\, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts\, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland\, and Time Zones Festival Italia. In 2013\, The New Museum of Contemporary Art paired Gideon with renowned South African artist William Kentridge for a joint program. His work is held in collections including the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, and the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\, NY. \nMira Cook is a singer\, composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, dancer\, and teacher based in Austin\, Texas. Her early contact with music came from Eastern chanting groups she attended with her parents and her studies in classical piano. Mira spent 8 years in California dancing professionally and developing her musical style\, and 13 years in New York touring internationally and performing with Battery Dance\, where she frequently combined live music and dance. Susan Isaacs\, presenting the work of artists responding to modernist ideas with a broad range of approaches. Exhibited together for the first time\, featured artists include Florence H. Austrian\, Jacob Glushakow\, Gladys Goldstein\, Mervin Jules\, Reuben Kramer\, Perna Krick\, Herman Maril\, Karl Metzler\, Selma L. Oppenheimer\, Amalie Rothschild\, Aaron Sopher\, Edward Rosenfeld\, and Peter Scholleck\, largely from JMM’s collection. Their views were shaped by Post Impressionism\, Fauvism\, German Expressionism\, Cubism\, Art Deco\, Surrealism\,  Bauhaus\, American Realism\, and Abstract Expressionism. DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for an afternoon celebrating the opening of Upon Thy Gates\, an exhibition presenting mezuzahs from around the world featured in the Elaine K. and Norman Winik Mezuzah Collection together with a selection of mezuzahs from JMM’s own collections. Learn how you can participate in Marking Passages: Mezuzah-Inspired Stories\, JMM’s new production studio project in partnership with The Stoop\, a live storytelling series and WYPR podcast. \nPlacing a mezuzah on a doorpost is among the most ancient of Jewish traditions. Each ritual case holds a scroll inscribed with the Shema prayer. Mezuzahs are considered amuletic by many and signal that the structure they adorn holds a Jewish space. They mark departures and homecomings\, and serve as touchstones for reflection along personal journeys. \nElaine K. and Norman Winik collected mezuzahs throughout their travels to many Jewish communities. The exhibition Upon Thy Gates\, on loan from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education\, and curated by Kenneth Helphand\, highlights 73 of these mezuzahs showcasing an eclectic range of styles\, materials and Jewish symbols found in mezuzahs\, including from Denmark\, England\, Ethiopia\, Germany\, Holland\, India\, Iran\, Israel\, Italy\, Morocco\, Poland\, the United States\, and Yemen. The mezuzahs date from the late 18th century to the work of contemporary artists. \nThis exhibition was produced by the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education. \nIn connection to the exhibition\, JMM is delighted to launch Marking Passages: Mezuzah-Inspired Stories\, a new JMM production studio project in partnership with The Stoop\, named for the Baltimore tradition of sharing stories on the signature marble entryway steps across the City. Previously\, she has worked at U.S. Art Company\, at Framebridge’s Fine Art Department; and earlier held multiple roles including Assistant Director & Solo Artist Coordinator at The Art League\, a community arts organization in Alexandria\, Virginia.  \nSusan Isaacs is retired from teaching art history and museum studies at Towson University\, where she curated many exhibitions for the Department of Art + Design\, Art History\, and Art Education Galleries. She has curated for numerous institutions across the United States and abroad. She writes and publishes on modern and contemporary art.  \nGeorge Ciscle has mounted groundbreaking exhibitions and taught courses in the fine arts and humanities for more than 50 years. A children’s librarian with a doctorate in communications design\, Betsy created the Mother Goose on the Loose (MGOL) early literacy program while living in Israel and brought it to the U.S. when she moved back in 1998. Winner of the Godfrey Award for Excellence in Public Library for children and families\, Mother Goose on the Loose was recognized for “revolutionizing the way storytimes are presented to young children at libraries across the county.” Betsy received the 2022 Association for Library Service to Children’s Distinguished Service Award and the 2018 Alex Vattemare Award for Creativity in Libraries.  \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to explore Next Generations: Turning the Page and Psychedelicatessen: A Powerful Dose of Art (please note that some content in this exhibition may not be appropriate for all ages). DESCRIPTION:Join JMM for the exhibit opening of Psychedelicatessen: A Powerful Dose of Art by Steve Marcus and take a long\, strange trip into NYC artist’s cartoon universe of kosher folk art with a new pop art series inspired by a fusion of the psychedelic hippie culture of the 1960s and Jewish culture. Marcus’ hand drawn works on paper and handmade objects are colorful\, comical flashbacks that take the viewer on a magic bus tour down an irreverent and mystical road. This new project seamlessly marries his Jewish spirituality with his past involvement in the counterculture and the cannabis reform movement\, putting a modern spin on Jewish subjects and life that form alternative culture classics for new generations. \nTurn on\, tune in\, drop in\, and experience Steve Marcus’ kabbalistic Jewish artwork inspired by underground comics\, Hasidism\, and the psychedelic art of the free love era. Shalom and Ahava. \nBorn in the month of August in 1969\, also known as the Summer of Love\, Steve Marcus takes the viewer out of this world with the artwork he creates in his studio on the Lower East Side\, one of New York City’s most important and historic Jewish neighborhoods which was once the stronghold of the Yiddish Theatre\, the Fillmore East and other popular and unpopular cultural and religious touchstones. Afterward\, attendees can explore the exhibitions To Say I Was Here: Arabic\, Greek\, Ladino\, and Turkish-Speaking Immigrant Musicians Recorded in the U.S.\, 1916–1966 and Next Generations: Turning the Page\, the interactives and collections display portals in the David M. Rubenstein Arcade\, and engage with the new audio/video production studio. \nKosher heavy hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. \nAccessibility: The Museum building is wheelchair accessible\, including the single-stall and multi-stall bathrooms. Food will be served indoors. Face masks are recommended but not required at this event. Complimentary masks will be provided. \nParking: There is a small\, free\, City-owned parking lot directly across Lloyd Street from the Museum entrance. DESCRIPTION:Join JMM for the opening of To Say I Was Here\, an exhibition of Arabic\, Greek\, Ladino\, and Turkish-speaking Jewish immigrant musicians recorded in the U.S. between 1916 and 1966. This multimedia exhibit currently on view delves into the lives and legacies of several immigrant musicians—both celebrated and little-known—who shaped the rich tapestry of American music in the early to mid-20th century. During this era of rapid expansion in the U.S. sound recording industry\, countless immigrant artists recorded songs from their homelands\, preserving and transforming cultural traditions. Among them were Jewish musicians from Aleppo\, Baghdad\, Istanbul\, Ioannina\, Izmir\, and beyond\, who performed not only for their Jewish communities but also within Armenian\, Greek\, and Arab circles\, united by shared languages and cultural bonds.

DESCRIPTION:Join the JMM for the opening of Next Generations: Turning the Page\, an exhibition celebrating the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s Generations magazine\, published from 1978 to 2012\, which offered 30 issues of insightful stories from more than 180 contributors\, amateur and professional writers alike. Covering a wide range of topics\, it became a cornerstone for sharing Maryland’s Jewish history and culture. More than a decade after its final issue\, we are excited to reopen our transformed museum with an exhibit that reactivates Generations. This reimagined presentation reinterprets select articles through a contemporary lens and shares these stories in fresh\, engaging formats\, welcoming audiences ranging from longtime supporters (and even former contributors) to those discovering our institution for the first time. \nBeyond honoring this treasured publication\, the exhibit explores some of its primary themes—migration\, nostalgia\, and food—through the perspectives of multiple curators. Each theme is brought to life with innovative storytelling that highlights both the enduring and evolving significance of these topics. \nHistorian and past co-editor of Generations\, Deb Weiner\, will share a brief history of the publication prior to a panel conversation with the exhibition curators. The panel will be moderated by exhibition Advisor Rebecca Uchill. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to engage with the Museum’s audio/video production studio. \nKosher light refreshments will be served indoors. DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Museum of Maryland presents a participatory concert with RAZA\, a musical ensemble led by Chana Raskin\, which explores the feminine voice in old Hasidic melodies. \nRAZA’s performances are a rare opportunity to experience live\, authentic Hasidic nigunim (melodies) sung by women. The group’s recent debut album\, Kapelya\, reflects Raskin’s deep personal connection to Chabad nigunim and their role in spiritual and communal healing.
