SUMMARY:Modernisms Curator Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for an evening exploring Modernisms\, curated by J. Susan Isaacs and presenting the work of artists responding to modernist ideas with a broad range of approaches. Featured artists include Florence H. Austrian\, Jacob Glushakow\, Gladys Goldstein\, Mervin Jules\, Reuben Kramer\, Perna Krick\, Herman Maril\, Karl Metzler\, Selma L. Oppenheimer\, Amalie Rothschild\, Aaron Sopher\, Edward Rosenfeld\, and Peter Scholleck\, largely from JMM’s collection. Their views were shaped by the new prevailing theories that emerged in Europe: Post Impressionism\, Fauvism\, German Expressionism\, Cubism\, Art Deco\, Surrealism\, and Bauhaus. Artist Jacob Glushakow described many of the practitioners within this group as “a school of Baltimore Jewish artists” that flourished for thirty years.  \nAttendees will have the opportunity to explore the exhibition in JMM’s Cohen-Weinberg Gallery\, hear a conversation with JMM Exhibits Manager Katie Andril\, exhibition curator J. Susan Isaacs\, and educator George Ciscle\, as well as visit the Museum’s recently opened production studio to share personal reflections in connection to the exhibition. \nKatie Andril is Exhibits Manager at the Jewish Museum of Maryland\, responsible for exhibition logistics and project management. Previously\, she has worked at U.S. Art Company\, at Framebridge’s Fine Art Department; and earlier held multiple roles including Assistant Director & Solo Artist Coordinator at The Art League\, a community arts organization in Alexandria\, Virginia. \nSusan Isaacs is retired from teaching art history and museum studies at Towson University\, where she curated many exhibitions for the Department of Art + Design\, Art History\, and Art Education Galleries. She has curated for numerous institutions across the United States and abroad. She writes and publishes on modern and contemporary art.  \nGeorge Ciscle has mounted groundbreaking exhibitions and taught courses in the fine arts and humanities for more than 50 years. After two decades of work as an educator and gallerist focused on promoting the careers of emerging artists\, Ciscle founded The Contemporary\, an “un-museum\,” which challenged existing conventions for exhibiting art. \nKosher refreshments\, beer\, and wine will be served. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. \nAccessibility: The Museum building\, including the family and all-gender single-stall bathroom\, is wheelchair accessible. Masks are welcome but not required. Complimentary masks will be available for anyone who would like one. Noise-reducing headphones and earplugs are available upon request at the front desk. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation\, live captioning\, and livestreaming will be available. Please register for access to the livestream link.  \nParking: There is street parking available in the neighborhood. \nFor questions\, please contact nmitchel@jewishmuseummd.org or 443.873.5178.

SUMMARY:Psychedelicatessen Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join JMM for the exhibit opening of Psychedelicatessen: A Powerful Dose of Art by Steve Marcus and take a long\, strange trip into NYC artist’s cartoon universe of kosher folk art with a new pop art series inspired by a fusion of the psychedelic hippie culture of the 1960s and Jewish culture. Marcus’ hand drawn works on paper and handmade objects are colorful\, comical flashbacks that take the viewer on a magic bus tour down an irreverent and mystical road. This new project seamlessly marries his Jewish spirituality with his past involvement in the counterculture and the cannabis reform movement\, putting a modern spin on Jewish subjects and life that form alternative culture classics for new generations. \nTurn on\, tune in\, drop in\, and experience Steve Marcus’ kabbalistic Jewish artwork inspired by underground comics\, Hasidism\, and the psychedelic art of the free love era. Shalom and Ahava. \nBorn in the month of August in 1969\, also known as the Summer of Love\, Steve Marcus takes the viewer out of this world with the artwork he creates in his studio on the Lower East Side\, one of New York City’s most important and historic Jewish neighborhoods which was once the stronghold of the Yiddish Theatre\, the Fillmore East and other popular and unpopular cultural and religious touchstones. Recognized in the 2015 publication A Jewish People’s History of the Lower East Side as one of the Lower East Side’s most illustrious and culturally influential residents\, Marcus has developed an international reputation in the art world over the past 36 years. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to explore the exhibition in JMM’s new Long Gallery\, hear from the artist and curator\, vibe to the sounds of DJ Balagan\, and engage with the Museum’s recently opened production studio. \nKosher refreshments\, beer\, and wine will be served. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. \nMasks are encouraged but not required for this event. SUMMARY:To Say I Was Here: Curator Talk + Listening Party
DESCRIPTION:Join JMM for the opening of To Say I Was Here\, an exhibition of Arabic\, Greek\, Ladino\, and Turkish-speaking Jewish immigrant musicians recorded in the U.S. between 1916 and 1966. This multimedia exhibit currently on view delves into the lives and legacies of several immigrant musicians—both celebrated and little-known—who shaped the rich tapestry of American music in the early to mid-20th century. During this era of rapid expansion in the U.S. sound recording industry\, countless immigrant artists recorded songs from their homelands\, preserving and transforming cultural traditions. Among them were Jewish musicians from Aleppo\, Baghdad\, Istanbul\, Ioannina\, Izmir\, and beyond\, who performed not only for their Jewish communities but also within Armenian\, Greek\, and Arab circles\, united by shared languages and cultural bonds.

SUMMARY:Next Generations Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join the JMM for the opening of Next Generations: Turning the Page\, an exhibition celebrating the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s Generations magazine\, published from 1978 to 2012\, which offered 30 issues of insightful stories from more than 180 contributors\, amateur and professional writers alike. Covering a wide range of topics\, it became a cornerstone for sharing Maryland’s Jewish history and culture. More than a decade after its final issue\, we are excited to reopen our transformed museum with an exhibit that reactivates Generations. This reimagined presentation reinterprets select articles through a contemporary lens and shares these stories in fresh\, engaging formats\, welcoming audiences ranging from longtime supporters (and even former contributors) to those discovering our institution for the first time. \nBeyond honoring this treasured publication\, the exhibit explores some of its primary themes—migration\, nostalgia\, and food—through the perspectives of multiple curators. Each theme is brought to life with innovative storytelling that highlights both the enduring and evolving significance of these topics. \nHistorian and past co-editor of Generations\, Deb Weiner\, will share a brief history of the publication prior to a panel conversation with the exhibition curators. The panel will be moderated by exhibition Advisor Rebecca Uchill. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to engage with the Museum’s audio/video production studio. \nKosher light refreshments will be served indoors. Masks are encouraged but not required for this event. Complimentary masks will be available. \nAccessibility: The Museum building is wheelchair accessible\, including the single-stall and multi-stall bathrooms. \nParking: There is a small\, free\, City-owned parking lot directly across Lloyd Street from the Museum entrance. SUMMARY:Once Out of Nature & Family
DESCRIPTION:Once Out of Nature & Family: A Virtual Author Talk with Joy Ladin \nJoin the JMM for a Zoom program with Joy Ladin about her two recently published works: her essay collection Once Out of Nature and her poetry collection Family.  \nRegistration is free\, but required. You can register here. For questions\, please contact Noah Mitchel at nmitchel@jewishmuseummd.org or 443.873.5178. \nJoy Ladin is a widely published essayist and poet\, literary scholar\, and nationally known speaker on transgender issues. From 2003 to 2021\, she held the David and Ruth Gottesman Chair in English at Stern College for Women of Yeshiva University; her gender transition and return to teaching in 2008 made her the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution. Joy is the author of twelve books\, including the National Jewish Book Award-winning revised second edition of The Book of Anna\, and ten books of poetry. Her work was featured in the 2021 JMM exhibition A Fence Around the Torah: Safety and Unsafety in Jewish Life. \nOnce Out of Nature: Selected Essays on the Transformation of Gender was written between 2008\, on the cusp of what Time called America’s “transgender tipping point\,” and 2021\, as anti-trans laws began multiplying\, these essays offer constructive\, compassionate ways to think and talk about how the growing awareness of transgender and nonbinary people is changing gender for everyone. Ladin\, the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution\, a nationally known speaker on transgender identities and issues\, and founding figure in trans poetry and trans theology\, has lived through and contributed to gender’s bitterly debated and still unfolding transformation. Drawing on her experiences as a trans parent\, spouse\, teacher\, and author rather than talking points\, buzz words\, or jargon\, these essays speak honestly and insightfully about how gender is changing\, the conflicts and anxieties these changes cause\, and what they can teach us about who we are\, who we can be\, and what it means to be human. \nFamily is Ladin’s most autobiographical and socially engaged poetry collection to date\, Family is an intimate exploration of private and public loss\, resilience and love whose emotional center and recurrent motif is the death of her mother. Family begins with “haiku suites\,” an invented form through which her mother’s dementia and her own growing disability are glimpsed by the light of a blossoming world. The lyric narratives that follow portray a widening family circle that also includes estranged children\, God\, targeted trans women\, and Trump-era America. The book concludes with “Autobiography of My Whiteness\,” a reckoning with Ladin’s belated awareness of her place in America’s racial hierarchy that connects the entangling of whiteness and love in her childhood relationship with her mother to recent police shootings of black and brown children that reveal\, behind the veil of whiteness\, the ongoing violence at the heart of her American family. \nLive captions will be provided during the presentation. You can register here.
