Join us to learn about pieces from our collections\, create Purim masks\, and put on a play in the puppet theater. No Registration is needed. \nFor the Whole Family \nGet a behind-the-scenes look into JMM’s collections by attending a Collections Showcase led by Sarah Huston\, Collections Manager\, and Acadia Roher\, Archivist. These Showcases will highlight pieces from the collection connected to Purim! \nFun for all ages: Create a paper mask for Purim or put on a puppet show in the Arcade! \nExplore Modernisms\, an exhibition highlighting fourteen Baltimore Jewish artists who responded to Modernist art movements. Please contact info@jewishmuseummd.org with questions or concerns. \n\n  \nJoin the Jewish Museum of Maryland for an afternoon of art\, discovery\, and hands-on creativity. Take a 30-minute tour of Modernisms\, led by the curator J. Susan Isaacs\, exploring the work of artists responding to modernist ideas with a broad range of approaches. Exhibited together for the first time\, featured artists include Florence H. Austrian\, Jacob Glushakow\, Gladys Goldstein\, Mervin Jules\, Reuben Kramer\, Perna Krick\, Herman Maril\, Karl Metzler\, Selma L. Oppenheimer\, Amalie Rothschild\, Aaron Sopher\, Edward Rosenfeld\, and Peter Scholleck\, largely from JMM’s collection. Their views were shaped by Post Impressionism\, Fauvism\, German Expressionism\, Cubism\, Art Deco\, Surrealism\,  Bauhaus\, American Realism\, and Abstract Expressionism. Many of the practitioners within this group were described by artist Jacob Glushakow as “a school of Baltimore Jewish artists” that flourished for thirty years. Learn about the art of collage\, and make your own collage with the exhibition curator and artist J. Susan Isaacs. \nIn addition to the materials provided\, participants can also bring photographs\, magazine images\, and favorite materials from home if they would like.  \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to visit Upon Thy Gates\, an exhibition presenting mezuzahs from around the world featured in the Elaine K. and Norman Winik Mezuzah Collection\, on loan from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education\, as well as to visit the Museum’s new audio/visual production studio to share personal reflections. \nRegistration for this event is required and capacity is limited.  \nThis program is recommended for ages 16+ \nSusan Isaacs is retired from teaching art history and museum studies at Towson University\, where she curated many exhibitions for the Department of Art + Design\, Art History\, and Art Education Galleries. She has curated for numerous institutions across the United States and abroad. She writes and publishes on modern and contemporary art and is a practicing artist who often employs collage in her own work.  \nKosher refreshments will be served.  \nAccessibility: The Museum building\, including the family and all-gender single-stall bathroom\, is wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for a night of mezuzah-inspired stories in partnership with The Stoop\, a live storytelling series and WYPR podcast. Hosted by Stoop Executive Producer and Live Show Producer\, Jessica Myles Henken and Stoop Live Show Producer Aaron Henken\, the program will feature live tales shared by project participants\, an open mic storytelling opportunity\, and stories shared in the Museum’s new audio/visual production studio. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to experience the exhibition Upon Thy Gates in JMM’s new Long Gallery\, visit the production studio\, and take home a copy of Mezuzah Magic!\, a comic strip created by JMM Public Art Coordinator Naomi Rose Weintraub. \nThis program is presented in connection to Upon Thy Gates\, an exhibition presenting mezuzahs from around the world featured in the Elaine K. and Norman Winik Mezuzah Collection\, on loan from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education\, and curated by Kenneth Helphand\, together with a selection of mezuzahs from JMM’s own collections. \nKosher refreshments\, beer\, and wine will be served. \nAccessibility: The Museum building\, including the family and all-gender single-stall bathroom\, is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Game On! Open Court: Ping-Pong Pop-Up Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for the opening of Open Court: Ping-Pong Pop-Up\, an experiential pop-up installation transforming the Museum’s Cohen Weinberg Gallery  into a community ping-pong venue featuring three tables\, scoreboards\, spectator bleachers\, a vibrant super graphic wall treatment\, and customized ping-pong balls. \nFeaturing graphic design by Bruce Willen\, Open Court is inspired by the deep history of Jewish ping-pong playing from backyards\, youth groups\, summer camps\, and play during Shabbat\, to the highest levels of the International Table Tennis Federation competition. \nLearn more about the installation\, see an anticipated ping-pong match between JMM Executive Director Sol Davis and Isaac Simon\, and try your hand (and paddle!) at the sport! \nIsaac Simon serves as the Internship Programs Manager at the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. Isaac is a trained archivist and Holocaust educator with an MA in History and MLS in Library Science from Queens College (CUNY). For the past five years he has worked for the noted writer and jazz historian\, Gary Giddins\, as both a research assistant on his upcoming biography of George Gershwin\, as well as a cataloguer of his personal papers. His research interests have dealt with Holocaust memorials\, memory\, and the history of Holocaust education in the United States. Isaac acted in the recently released A24 film Marty Supreme in the role of Roger\, a cocky amateur table tennis player who is hustled by Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Mauser. \n1:30 PM Program opening + Isaac Simon v. This milestone paved the way for deeper Jewish participation in civic life\, yet also underscores the broader struggles for equality\, as racial discrimination against black and marginalized communities remained deeply entrenched. Through immersive storytelling\, artifacts\, archival materials\, and original short films\, the exhibition illuminates the complexities of religious and cultural integration while celebrating Jewish resilience and contributions to the nation’s history over time and into the present. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to receive a welcome from JMM Executive Director Sol Davis\, hear brief remarks from curator Judy Margles\, explore the exhibition\, and engage with the exhibits team in the gallery.
