SUMMARY:Crossroads Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Jewish Museum of Maryland on Sunday\, April 12\, to be among the first to see Jews of Maryland at the Crossroads of Identity. Curated by Judy Margles\, JMM’s original core exhibition provides a statewide historical exploration of social\, cultural\, and religious identity through the lens of Maryland’s Jewish experience. \nAt the heart of the exhibition is the 1826 Maryland Jew Bill\, granting Jews the right to hold public office—an early victory for religious freedom in America. This milestone paved the way for deeper Jewish participation in civic life\, yet also underscores the broader struggles for equality\, as racial discrimination against black and marginalized communities remained deeply entrenched. Through immersive storytelling\, artifacts\, archival materials\, and original short films\, the exhibition illuminates the complexities of religious and cultural integration while celebrating Jewish resilience and contributions to the nation’s history over time and into the present. \nNote: JMM Friends and Members are invited to preview the exhibit and hear from the curator at our Members Morning Preview at 10 AM. Not a JMM Member yet? You can learn more about our Friends and Members programs here: Membership – Jewish Museum of Maryland. \nParking: Street parking is available in the neighborhood. Visitors are strongly encouraged to read parking signs with care. \nFor questions\, please contact info@jewishmuseummd.org or 410.732.6400. \nRegistration is not required. The Museum will be open to the public from 12 – 4. \n

SUMMARY:Core Connections: Lecture with Dr. Eric Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum for the launch of the Core Connections program series\, exploring themes connected to the Museum’s new core exhibition\, Jews of Maryland at the Crossroads of Identity. \nOn Middle Ground: A History of the Jews of Baltimore\, written by Prof. Eric L. Goldstein of Emory University\, co-authored with Deborah Weiner\, and published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2018\, served as a key text in the development of the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s new core exhibition. Drawing on his award-winning book\, Dr. Goldstein will explore the historical factors that have given Jewish Baltimore a unique character and feel\, but also allowed the region to contribute disproportionately to American Jewish life over the past 250 years of this country’s history. \nFollowing the presentation\, engage with Dr. Goldstein through an audience question and answer session\, experience Crossroads in the new Meyerhoff Gallery\, and add your voice to the exhibition in the Museum’s production studio. \nEric L. Goldstein is Associate Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Emory University\, where he directed the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies for over a decade. In addition to On Middle Ground\, he is also the author of The Price of Whiteness: Jews\, Race\, and American Identity (Princeton\, 2006).
