Museum Matters: Count Down, Measure Up

We have blessedly reached the last month of 2020. It is hard to have much nostalgia for the pandemic, or the divisive politics, or the tremendous job losses, or the instances of racial injustice that have dominated the news for the last twelve months. However, even as we count down the days (like the candles in the menorah) there is hope for better months ahead – a vaccine, an economic recovery, and steps towards a more just society.

It is in that spirit that we bring you the eclectic program offerings for December. For example, in the next two weeks we’ll be counting stories just for fun in celebration of Hannukah, but we’ll also be counting underrepresented groups within the Jewish community.

Programs in our series with Chizuk Amuno on Jewish institutions in the age of #BlackLivesMatter continue into January. And what better way to get 2021 off to a great start than by focusing on what it takes to be an “upstander.”

Speaking of countdowns, consider counting to 101, as of January 2 that’s the number of years since Isaac Asimov was born. To celebrate we are showcasing two great sci-fi authors, Asimov, whose native tongue was Yiddish and Jules Verne who was a surprising sensation in Yiddish translation.

As for me, I’m sadly counting down to my last day at JMM, but know that I will be there at the Jules Verne program on January 7 in my favorite role at a museum… as a visitor.
