Throughout the ages, novelty & variety entertainment has been humanity’s mainstay, predating all our modern forms of organized amusement and entertainment. Magicians and other variety talent have filled that role as street performers, dime museum attractions, and as the stars of circus and carnival sideshows. Harry Houdini’s career straddled the golden age of such entertainment and helped define much…. but not all of it. James Taylor overviews that era and its attractions, putting the oldest form of human entertainment into its proper place in show biz history.

This program is presented in relation to the Inescapable: The Life and Legacy of Harry Houdini exhibit, on display June 24, 2018 – January 21, 2019.
