Take a (Virtual) Trip with JMM!
“What time is it in Australia?” Now there’s a question I never thought I would ask when I joined JMM. But it helps explain why we are doing programs this month at 5 in the morning and ten at night. JMM is taking advantage of a virtual world without borders, to connect Baltimore with Jewish museums in London, Johannesburg, and Melbourne.
The excitement begins this Sunday, August 9th as we head across the pond to visit a museum with a mikvah a little bit older than ours (by about 600 years). From the medieval mikvah to the photos and artifacts of Kindertransport, at 1:00pm EST, Emma Crew of the Jewish Museum London is going to take us on a special tour through the history of Jewish Britain. (And if we have any true early birds, you can also see this program at 5:00am on August 20th.) But this program is just the beginning of our international travels!
Returning the favor, I’ll make a best attempt to explain Maryland’s Jewish history to folks in London and Johannesburg on Thursday, August 13th at 1pm for a look at America’s Jewish History Through a Baltimore Lens. Then, on Sunday, August 16th we’re heading into the Southern hemisphere for the story of South Africa’s Jewish community with Museum Director Gavin Morris. (Again for you early birds, this program is also happening at 5:00am on August 12th.)
For our final destination, on Thursday, August 27th we’re going down under! Museum Director Jessica Bram and Curator Eleni Papavasileou are going to give us a glimpse into the history, culture, and lives of the Jewish communities of Australia along with a peek into their flagship exhibit Calling Australia Home. (You can also watch this program with your early morning coffee at 7:00am on August 23rd.)
Join us on our August international tour of Jewish Museums and Jewish history – no passport needed!
