Lecture: Jewish Life in Mr. Lincoln’s city

Speaker: Laura Apelbaum, Executive Director of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington

 

In Washington you can literally walk in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln. Learn how the nation’s capital was transformed during the Civil War and the role of the nascent Jewish community at the time. Hear stories of Jewish soldiers, lawyers, newspaper publishers and even a Jewish woman who was a Southern spy! Many of these stories were uncovered in the course of research for the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington’s exhibition, now on display at the Jewish Museum of Maryland during the month of February.

 

Laura is a native of the Washington area and has been Executive Director of the Society for twenty years. Trained as a lawyer, she has graduate degrees in law from Georgetown University and George Washington University, and a Bachelors degree in American History from Duke University. She is the editor of several publications, most relevantly, Jewish Life in Mr. Lincoln’s City . Her grandparents lived on East Baltimore street just opposite Patterson Park and are buried at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery in East Baltimore not far from the Museum.

 

Also on display in the Museum’s lobby is the fabulous exhibit Jewish Life in Mr. Lincoln’s City, created by the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington.Don’t miss out, as the exhibit will only be on display through the month of February!
