JMM Monthly Zine: Tishrei 5784

This month’s zine focuses on Tishrei, which goes from September 16 to October 15, 2023.

Tishrei is full of holidays: Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. We are given many opportunities to welcome the Jewish New Year as a community through celebration and reflection.

This month’s zine includes:

  • A Place for the Etrog by Aimée Pohl, JMM Reference Assistant

A piece discussing etrogs, the citron fruits used for Sukkot rituals, and shares images of etrog cases from the JMM collections.

  • Transforming Sin by Miriam Saperstein from the syllabus project.org.

A short essay exploring the concept of sin in a Jewish context.

  • Popping into the Jewish New Year by Naomi Rose Weintraub, Communications & Public Art Coordinator.

A piece featuring 19th Century Rosh Hashana Pop-up Cards from the JMM Collections.

You can pick up physical copies of the monthly zine in the Lombard and Lloyd Library or download a PDF version here, and a printable booklet version here. Lombard and Lloyd Library is located in the grassy corner of the JMM’s campus at the intersection of Lombard and Lloyd Streets.

We hope to provide space for people both at the JMM and beyond to share their thoughts and creations as they relate to where we are in the Hebrew calendar.

If you would like to contribute to the zine, please email the JMM’s Communications & Public Art Coordinator, Naomi Rose Weintraub, at nweintraub@jewishmuseummd.org.
