JMM part of Civil War exhibit at Mount Clare Museum House

When we started putting together our current exhibit, “Personal Accounts of the Civil War Experience”, we knew we wanted to tell stories from people involved on both sides of the Civil War.   Many of the objects loaned to us, though,  were from people who had served on the  Confederate side.  For balance, we were looking not just for a Northern point of view, but hopefully from some one right here in Baltimore.

I did a little research in the JMM’s  collection online and found that there was a Civil War sword and scabbard that had belonged to Leopold Blumenberg.  Blumenberg was a staunch abolitionist and at  the beginning of the war helped establish the 5th Maryland Infantry in Baltimore.   He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam but continued in government service throughout the war.

We put in a request to borrow the sword and with the help of Jobi Zink, the loan was approved.   The sword makes a great addition to the exhibit and allows us to tell a very interesting Baltimore story.

Again, the JMM has been a generous lender to an exhibit at Mount Clare Museum House.  We hope that you visit the exhibit which runs through November 12, 2011  to learn more about Leopold Blumenberg and others who witnessed the Civil War.

Mount Clare Museum House is located at 1500 Washington Blvd. in Carroll Park.  Our hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm with tours on the hour.
