Volunteer Spotlight on Irv Weintraub!

Irv Weintraub has been a library/archives volunteer for four to five years. He became interested in volunteering after he heard that some of his friends from Beth Israel Congregation were involved at the Museum. His father came from a small town in Ukraine and is mother is from Latvia.  Irv has two masters including a library science degree from Columbia University. He has had two careers as a college professor and as a librarian. I learned that his two cousins, Moses and Rose Cohen, were founders of the Jewish Historical Society, which was the precursor of the Jewish Museum of Maryland.

Irv has been invaluable translating Hebrew and Yiddish archival materials for the Museum, such as from organizations dedicated to helping immigrants settle into Baltimore.

When he is not translating, he enjoys socializing with our staff and fellow volunteers during lunch and hearing about their careers and social life.  He likes to maintain contact with Jewish issues and organizations and highly values being able to contribute to an organization that is important for Jews in Baltimore.

In chatting with Irv, we connected over our travels in Berlin, Germany as well as our love for museums. I quickly discovered that Irv is an intelligent, kind and gentle soul who is very dedicated to the JMM.
