Volunteer Spotlight on Rena Rotenberg!

Rena Rotenberg has been a front desk volunteer at the Jewish Museum of Maryland for the past two months. She rightly describes herself as “a very knowledgeable Jew.”  Rena grew up in Brooklyn, NY, but moved to Baltimore in 1960 when she married a man who was born in Germany and grew up in China. She has worked as a pre-school teacher and director for 35 years. She taught at Stevenson University, CCBC and at Bais Yaakov. Rena founded the Shalom Baby program at the JCC, started the early childhood department at the Center for Jewish Education https://www.cjebaltimore.org/) and directed it for 30 years. She is also a co-author of two books and is an accredited childbirth teacher.

Rena decided to volunteer at the JMM because she wanted to help disseminate knowledge about Baltimore’s Jewish community. She has enjoyed observing programs such as our recent program on the Six Day War and interacting with many people, especially children.  She has found it fascinating learning about the different parts required to run a museum and how each staff member has a specific role to play in fulfilling our mission. We have deeply valued her help at the front desk checking in visitors and assisting orienting guests to the museum.

In her spare time, Rena enjoys playing the piano, reading, embroidering and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also volunteers at the Early Childcare Center at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation.

If you know of anyone else who would like to join Rena in volunteering at our front desk (or any other area of the Museum), please contact Sue Foard at sfoard@jewishmuseummd.org.
