Dear Jewish Museum of Maryland community,

In recent years, in ways large and small, the JMM has been renewing and changing, growing from a 20th-century museum to a 21st-century one.

We are excited to announce that the first phase of the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s capital project is underway. To accommodate the physical work that will be done on the campus, the Museum building will be closed to the public through the summer of 2024.

The first phase of the project will include:

· A transformation of the Museum front of house: interior entrance, lobby, and orientation space;

· The construction of an audio/video studio to produce podcasts, oral histories, video projects, and more;

· The construction of a new gallery space that can be used for multiple purposes, including performances, exhibits, and video shoots;

· An update of all of our galleries, including new floors, lighting, and technology;

· Vital restoration work in the Lloyd Street Synagogue.

As part of this front of house renovation, we will close our longstanding core exhibit Voices of Lombard Street: A Century of Change in East Baltimore. We plan to develop a new core exhibition over a number of years using a participatory process.

Throughout the building closure, JMM employees will continue work on programming, education, archives and collections, audio and video production, exhibition development, capital project support, and so much more, though our programs will be happening offsite at other partner organizations and online.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Jewish Museum of Maryland over the years. Although our physical campus is temporarily closing to the public, we will continue to fulfill the JMM’s mission of connecting people to Jewish experiences, connecting Maryland’s Jewish community to its roots, and inspiring everyone to explore history, take action, and imagine better futures. We look forward to growing together.

Sincerely,

Sol Davis, Ph.D.
